WASHINGTON COUNTY DEMOCRATS CENTRAL COMMITTEE JANUARY 16, 2018 MEETING MINUTES 6:30 PM – ART DOMESTIQUE

The Washington County Democrats met at Art Domestique on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. Chairperson Ed Conway called the meeting to order at 6:35pm. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Agenda: Motion to approve the agenda, seconded and passed with voice vote.

Minutes from January: The minutes from the November meeting were presented. Motion to approve the minutes, seconded and passed with voice vote.

Treasurer’s Report for January 16:

Evie Richardson presented the treasurer’s report. There was no new income. New expenses since November 14 include reimbursements to Sonya Housholder for Avery business cards ($24.88), Lorraine Williams for parade Candy ($195.87), Steve Maxon for parade gas ($100), and USPS Postal Box ($70.00). The candidate fund for HD 78 is $150.00, general candidate fund $178.00, and general cash $2509.60 for a total cash balance of $2837.60.

REPORT OF THE CHAIR:

OLD BUSINESS:

Gab & Gobble fundraiser: Vice Chair Kim Davis reported that the fundraiser with the Keokuk County Democrats on November 16 was a success. Several candidates were present.

Caucuses on February 5th: Just a reminder about the caucuses on February 5th. IDP is offering webinar trainings for precinct chairs.

NEW BUSINESS:

Legislative Forums: On Saturday, January 20th, will be the first of three legislative forums. Due to the anticipated attendance, the event has been moved to the Washington Public Library.

Women’s March: Following the legislative forum on January 20th, there will be a local women’s march around the square and towards Blair House.

Upcoming candidate events: There are several upcoming candidate events including Freb Hubbell on January 17 and John Norris on January 18, both in Fairfield.

Fundraising letter: It’s time to send out a fundraiser letter to county democrats. We’ll have online links for collecting donations online. We’ll also have two supervisor districts up for election – District 3 (Wards 2 & 3) and District 5 (Ainsworth).

Phone banking & canvassing: We need to be prepared for canvassing & phone banking. Vice Chair Kim Davis strongly encouraged that both independents and democrats be pulled from votebuilder.

Voter ID Laws: The new voter ID laws in Iowa go into effect in 2019. For 2018, voters can still be issued a provincial ballot but voters need to be prepared for 2020.

Ione Burham: Robin Plattenberger-Gilmore shared that Ione Burham passed away on Jan 10th. Her funeral will be held on February 4th at 2:30pm at United Methodist. Ione was a faithful democrat who wrote impactful letters to the editor. The family is asking for memorials to Halcyon House in lieu of flowers. In Ione’s honor, everyone is encouraged to send in a letter to editor!
