Meeting Minutes November 14, 2017


The Washington County Democrats met at Art Domestique on Tuesday, November 14, 2017. Chairperson Ed Conway called the meeting to order at 7:00pm. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Agenda: Motion to approve the agenda, seconded and passed with voice vote.

Minutes from October: A verbal summary of the October meeting (no meeting minutes) was presented. Motion to approve the minutes as verbally presented was seconded and passed with voice vote.

Treasurer's Report for November 14: Evie Richardson presented the treasurer's report. There were no new expenses. Income for the month is from the Rural Iowans Carving a Path for the Future fundraiser at Lake Darling in the amount of $270.00. The candidate fund for HD 78 is $150, general candidate fund is $178.00 and the expendable fund is $2,900.35 for a total cash balance of $3228.35.

REPORT OF THE CHAIR:

OLD BUSINESS: Lake Darling fundraiser debrief: Vice Chair Kim Davis reported that the Fundraiser with the Keokuk County Democrats was a success. Proceeds were split 40/60 with $270 raised for the Washington County Democrats.

Suggested methods to increase advertising exposure includes using KCII for a 30 second slot or the local paper.

The next fundraiser is on Thursday for a Gab and Gobble dinner, collaborating with the Keokuk County Democrats. Some discussion followed on how we can use electronic payments for tickets and donations.

NEW BUSINESS: 2018 Caucus: Caucuses will be February 5th.

Caucus sites Washington Wards 1-4, West Chester, Ainsworth, Brighton/Marian/Crawford will be at the Washington Public Library Kalona, Riverside & Wellman will be at the Kalona Public Library

Members discussed how best to advertise the location of precinct caucuses. It was suggested to send a postcard to registered democrats after evaluating a cost estimate first.

Iowa 2nd District Rep With Julie and Jerrold Gilmere's move to Iowa City, representation of Washington County for Iowa's 2nd District meetings is vacated.

Nomination of Kim Davis as a new 2nd district representative. Motion to approve was seconded and passed with voice vote. Nomination of Evie Richardson as an alternative for Kim. Motion to approve was seconded and passed with voice vote.

December meeting: Instead of having a December meeting, we will plan to hold either a Christmas party or other event. Participating in the winter parade was suggested, but we will defer participation to December 2018.

Phone banking/canvassing prep: Members suggested we offer workshops as follow-ups to meetings or other events.
